I don’t have beef with Comic Sans and Curlz. They are perfectly fine when they are left in their alphabetized order and seen but never heard. What I have a problem with is you. Who am I talking to? Well I am talking to he who used Curlz on a reggae poster because it is crazy and trippy and they want it to exude “Bob Marley.” Well guess what; it doesn’t. All it says is “I am too lazy to kern, resize, manipulate and experiment with classics like Helvetica or Kepner to create a typographic design that uses technique to evoke a mood rather than cheap gimmicks that are as tired as the cliche your project is built upon.”
Nothing says amateur like the random use of Comic Sans. You want a fun hand written font then here is an idea: Write it yourself. Dare you ever get off the computer and create something that is unique and unreproducible. This is the soul of graphic design and art. You want to stand out, be unique? Then go back to basics and put some blood, sweat and tears into your work. Graphic design is still art, remember that.
Employ type to work for you but also you have to be willing to work with it. My graphic design professor put it best when she said of Curlz, “I wish it would just crawl into a hole and die.” Bravo.
